Editorial — Opening time

There is a philosophical way of taking History: to sublate it, to judge it, to close it. Non-philosophy takes another. It does not ask what History means, nor where it is heading, but what it might become once we stop letting it decide about us. This seventh issue of Philo-fictions opens History as a material, not as a tribunal.

We did not want yet another history of ideas. We wanted fictions — rigorous, non-standard — that take the ordinary words of time seriously: the beginning, the end, today, tomorrow, a moment ago. These are our true historical categories: the ones no one has ever proved and everyone uses.

Against the great History told in the singular and the capital letter, we look for the histories lived according-to-the-One, indifferent to their own meaning. “I swear,” “you'll see”: promises without proof — perhaps the only futures we have. And “nothing”: the remainder, what makes no History and yet took place.

The argument

History may be philosophy's last great Decision: the gesture by which thought grants itself a meaning, a course and an end, then judges itself by its own measure. Non-philosophy does not refute it — it suspends it, and treats it as material to be fictioned according to the Real. Eight entries, eight ordinary words, eight open sites.

Eight words of time

• 01 — The beginning. Every History demands an origin. What if beginning were not founding? Write geneses in-the-last-instance — beginnings that commence nothing.
• 02 — The end. End of History, apocalypse, closure of meaning: the end is our most widely shared fantasy. What is an end that completes nothing?
• 03 — Today. The present is not a point on a line. Think the contemporary as lived — not as epoch, nor as a verdict on what came before.
• 04 — Tomorrow. Futurology, prophecy, planning: tomorrow is already colonised. Return the future to its indeterminacy, against the anticipation that annexes it.
• 05 — A moment ago. The near past, the instant just fled: the smallest unit of memory. A micro-history of the almost-now.
• 06 — I swear. The promise, the oath, the testimony: a History without proof, held up by nothing but a word given to someone.
• 07 — You'll see. The announcement, the threat, the hope: futures one does not prove but addresses. A grammar of the not-yet.
• 08 — Nothing. What made no History and yet took place. A history of the remainder: ordinary lives, the insignificant, the forgotten.

How to contribute

We welcome articles, essays, philo-fictions, interviews and translations, in French or in English. Contributions in dialogue with François Laruelle's non-philosophy are welcome, with no requirement of allegiance.

• Abstract: ± 800 characters + 5 keywords.

Timeline

• 30 Sept. 2026 — Proposals: title + 800-character abstract.
• 31 Dec. 2026 — Full manuscripts due.
• Feb. 2027 — Editorial feedback and revisions.
